Why Men Kneel to Propose
You’ll read a lot online about why men get down on one knee to propose. Many will claim that the image harkens back to medieval chivalry, and knights kneeling before kings to pledge fealty and honorable service to their king. There is probably something to that image, but I offer you another one.
Look at the engagement ring.
The engagement ring has two parts: the band with the setting and the diamond. The band with the setting holds up the diamond and shows the diamond off. The diamond speaks for itself.
When a man gets on his knee and looks up at his bride-to-be, he becomes the setting, and he looks up at the diamond. In this moment, he sees in her the crown of his life and his life’s purpose. She is the crowning jewel, and he is the setting. That’s why he gets down on one knee.
If we reflect on this image we can ask two serious questions:
If you are the man: Do you honor and cherish her as the crowning jewel of your life, or do you sometimes take advantage, or take her for granted?
If you are the woman: Do you ennoble the man the be virtuous? Do you make him strive to be worthy of you, or do you allow yourself to be easily moved by his gentile kindness?
Dating should instill a great reverence and admiration for our beloved, if it does not, how can the relationship move forward?
Think on it!
